iPad 2 Smart Cover Review – Pros and Cons
You can’t have the release of an Apple product without a million and one accessories to go with it and that holds true for the new iPad 2. The iPad 2 Smart Cover is one of these accessories and is designed and sold by Apple itself. Let’s take a look at what makes this pricey add-on so great, and maybe not so great.
First of all the iPad 2 Smart Cover comes in two versions, the $39 polyurethane version and the sleek $69 leather version for those of you who want to go for the professional look. The polyurethane version is available in pink, orange, green, blue and gray while the leather version comes in beige, black, gray and red.
As typical of an Apple product the iPad 2 Smart Covers are actually more than just a way to protect your iPad 2’s screen. But still, is it enough to justify the price tag?

iPad 2 Smart Cover Pros:
The fact the iPad 2 Smart Cover case is about as small and simple as it can get (despite its functionality) is going to make it difficult for third party developers to sell as many of their products according to internet speculation. Here are some of the major pros of the iPad 2 Smart Cover –
- It gives your iPad 2 a stylish look
- It comes in a variety of colors
- It’s made by Apple so it fits perfectly
- It turns the iPad 2 on when removed and puts it to sleep when applied
- It can be applied to the front or the back of the device
- It can be folded and used as a stand for the iPad 2 when you’re typing, watching movies, making video calls, etc.
- Its thin design doesn’t add any bulk to the iPad 2
iPad 2 Smart Cover Cons:
Probably the biggest flaw of the new iPad 2 Smart Covers is the fact that it can’t protect the front and back of the iPad 2 at the same time. When you place the iPad 2 on a surface you can use the Smart Cover to protect the back of the device but when you’re carrying it around you’re obviously going to want to use it to protect the front which leaves the back vulnerable.
Also another thing you have to keep in mind is the fact that the iPad 2 Smart Cover offers no protection if you drop the device or if it sustains a huge impact. In the end it can only really protect against scratches.
As all Apple fans know, owning the latest and greatest Apple product such as the iPad 2 is just as much about style as it is about functionality. If you’re going to drop $500+ on a new piece of hardware you’re going to want to keep it looking good. You basically have three options if you really want to protect your iPad 2: buy two covers (one for the front and another for the back), buy an all round case (OtterBox is the best), or allow your iPad 2 to get scratched up.
Lastly there is no denying the fact that the iPad 2 Smart Cover is pricey (especially if you go with the two cover option), as official Apple products tend to be. If you want the best you’re going to have to pay for it and most Apple fans don’t seem to have a problem with that since they produce quality products. So is the iPad 2 Smart Cover worth it? That depends on what a scratch free iPad 2 is worth to you.
