Does the iPad 2 have a USB Port?
With the release of the new iPad 2 many Apple fans hoped that it would include an iPad USB port since it was missing from the original. The unfortunate thing is that no, there isn’t an iPad USB port on the iPad 2. However, there are ways around this to connect certain USB devices to your iPad 2.
iPad 2 USB Support – Here’s How to Add it!
Despite the fact that there is no iPad USB port on the iPad 2 it is thinner and lighter than the original. In fact, there is even less room for an iPad 2 USB port now than there was with the iPad 1. In other words, there may never be a USB port on an iPad. However, I do hope they figure out a way to do it because I would love it.
Another frustration for many fans of the iPad was the fact that there is also no port for SD memory cards and no Flash support. Given what Apple has said about Flash in the past it should come as no surprise that Flash support wasn’t included.
Is the lack of an iPad 2 USB port and these other features truly crippling for iPad 2 users? It can’t be denied that even in spite of this the iPad 2 is still incredibly popular, but I’m still holding out hope that they add a USB port and a SD Card slot on the iPad 3.
Is iPad 2 USB Support Possible?
Due to the immense demand of an iPad USB port Apple has come up with a way to connect certain USB devices to the iPad 2 using an iPad USB adapter. This adapter allows certain devices to connect to the iPad 2 such as digital cameras. This isn’t anything new and was used with the original iPad.
The Apple iPad Camera Connection Kit, as it’s called, sells for $29 and comes with two adapters. The first is the aforementioned iPad USB adapter and the second is a SD memory card adapter. It should be noted that the iPad USB adapter can also work to connect your iPhone to your iPad 2.
Even though it is called a “Camera Connection Kit”, the USB adapter can be used with other USB devices as well such as microphones, headphones and keyboards. You can also download apps that allow you to connect external storage devices. This is a great way around the problem of there being no USB port on the iPad 2.
Is the Lack Of an iPad 2 USB Port Really a Drawback?
There have been two main opinions on the issue of iPad USB port (or lack thereof) and that is those who don’t really care and those who think it should have been included since the beginning. While the camera adapter is a great work around, it may not work with every USB device and some users may resent the fact that they have to pay extra for something they feel should have been included in the device to begin with.
In any event, the iPad 2 has a ton of great features to offer and the lack of an iPad 2 USB port seems relatively minor considering that camera adapter is a suitable workaround for the problem.
